The Sun Herald and The Age recently featured Dr Ritu Gupta for her expert advice on acne, specifically “bacne” or back acne.
Dr Ritu explained that acne can appear on the face, chest, and back. Several factors contribute to acne, including a family history of acne, hormonal surges of oestrogen and progesterone, the presence of bacteria in the oil glands, and the formation of comedones.
She explains that the back is prone to pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads because it’s hard to reach. Therefore, thorough skin care using a body wash that contains salicylic acid and a back-exfoliating tool to reach difficult areas is critical to managing or avoiding acne. She also recommends using back sprays with tea tree oil and salicylic acid.
But if using a body wash and back acne spray does not improve the acne, a GP may prescribe a peroxide foam treatment to kill the bacteria that cause inflammation. If the acne persists, it may be time to seek the help of a dermatologist.
