Dr Ritu Gupta Featured in Adore Beauty: The Most Common Azelaic Acid Mistakes

Sydney specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta was featured in Adore Beauty for her views on the most common mistakes people make in using azelaic acid.

Known as a multitasking acid, azelaic acid can reduce redness, congestion, and pigmentation, and even out skin tone —without the stress of products containing active ingredients. However, misuse can easily impact azelaic acid’s effectiveness. Dr Ritu discussed these mistakes and corrective measures alongside aesthetic practitioner Alex Pike, RN.

Dr Ritu stressed the importance of barrier support despite azelaic acid’s gentle effects on skin. Applying the ‘moisture sandwich’ technique (a layer of moisturiser, then azelaic acid, and moisturiser) is crucial to avoid tightness, peeling, and stinging.

Applying azelaic acid after in-clinic treatments such as laser, peels, or microneeding is another mistake. Despite its gentleness, azelaic acid can cause redness and irritation; thus, a minimal routine consisting of cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection is enough.

Lastly, giving up on azelaic acid too soon, thinking it does not work, is quite common among users. Azelaic acid requires consistency and patience to work. Dr Ritu reminded that skincare actives are ‘long-term partners’, not an overnight fix, requiring at least 8 to 12 weeks of use to achieve the best results.
