Dr Ritu Featured on Healthed Discussing Changes in Laser & Cosmetic Dermatology

Specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta was featured on Healthed’s dermatology cases podcast for her expertise in laser cosmetic treatments. Hosted by GP and medical educator Dr David Lim, the podcast focused on the latest advances in laser and energy-based technologies.

Dr Ritu explained that laser treatment is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, used to clean up the skin, remove lines and wrinkles (dynamic and static), treat lumps and bumps, and address other medical conditions.

Laser treatments have undergone significant advancements, according to Dr Ritu. There are Picosecond lasers which use ultra-short pulses of energy, so there’s less time for heating and less risk to pigment cells. AI has also introduced “idiot-proof” machines, but Dr Ritu believes that the operator’s knowledge matters most to ensure safety and effectiveness.

The podcast also addressed hyperpigmentation, a common side effect of laser treatment, in individuals with darker skin tones. Dr Ritu said hyperpigmentation can be cleared using prescription medications and Picosecond lasers. She further explained the differences between various forms of laser and non-laser treatments, as well as ultrasound for face tightening, which stimulates collagen and elastin production to lift and tighten skin.

Dr Ritu also discussed the difference between stimulating collagen with non-invasive methods, such as ultrasound, and injecting collagen. She tackled the use of fillers (temporary and permanent) and the popularity of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) products for weight loss. When asked about Ozempic face, Dr Ritu explained that the hallmark changes in the face are due to up to 40% of the weight loss from this drug being muscle. She described it as people looking older than their years, with hollow eyes, more prominent smile lines, sunken temples, very visible jowls, and sagging or looser skin.

Dr Ritu also iterated the role of GPs in educating their patients, saying that without expert guidance, they may turn to non-professionals or social media for answers and unsafe treatments.

Dr Ritu explained why trusting only specialists who use operator-dependent machines is critical, rather than profit-based products. She said that in her clinic, her staff are appropriately trained and supervised, they take ownership of the patient experience and manage treatments carefully, ensuring everything is done safely and properly.
