Dr Ritu Exposes The Deadly Trend Towards Tanning in The Australian

The Australian

Sydney’s leading dermatologist, Dr Ritu Gupta, sheds light on a recent terrifying trend on social media. Young individuals, particularly on TikTok, display tanned bodies, even shapes marked on burnt skin. They claim to be influencers, saying they don’t wear sunscreen and that the sun provides healing and wellbeing. Additionally, they claim sunscreen is toxic to the body and the environment.

Dr Ritu expressed her concern towards these practices, considering Australia has a rising trend of melanoma diagnoses. Applying sunscreen has been established as the most effective way to prevent melanoma, as well as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It can significantly inhibit skin ageing, pigmentation, and sun spots.

Recently, consumer watchdog Choice conducted an independent study of the 20 most popular sunscreens in the Australian market. Only four brands lived up to their advertised SPF content, while the remaining 16 performed poorly. Dr Ritu stated that this uncertainty can lead to public mistrust in sunscreen protection.

Dr Ritu mentioned in closing that good sun habits are at risk of being overlooked because of the influence of social media and poor information. She reasserted that sunscreen ingredients are safe and that research is currently ongoing on the effects of specific ingredients on the endocrine system.
