Specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta was featured in Harper’s BAZAAR for her expert views on creating a simple skincare routine. She acknowledged the changing seasons’ effects on the weather and people’s lifestyles, leading to unnecessary sun exposure that can cause DNA damage at the cellular level.
A straightforward skincare routine becomes a necessity for surviving the changing seasons. Dr Ritu mentioned summer skin issues caused by sweating, such as miliaria (a type of sweat rash) and folliculitis. Despite being steadfast in sun protection and SPF, it is still possible to develop dark spots and pigmentation, which sometimes remain into autumn and winter.
Those with sensitive or reactive skin, such as those with rosacea, may find redness worsens during the summer months, says Dr Ritu. This is due to heat dilating broken capillaries, causing flushing and blushing. While sunscreen application is critical during this time, constant reapplication, combined with poor skin cleansing, can lead to acne breakouts. Dr Ritu states that wearing sunscreen that matches a person’s skin type prevents clogging and, eventually, breakouts.
When it comes to products to add to a simplified skincare routine, Dr Ritu mentioned niacinamide and tranexamic acid, saying these pigment-inhibiting serums are helpful after the summer season to minimise brown spots and prevent darkening of pre-existing brown marks and freckles.
