The Australian Newspaper Interviews Dr Ritu Gupta: The Hidden Dangers of Unregulated Cosmetic Clinics

The Australian

Dr Ritu Gupta supports doctors’ call for the national shake-up of the cosmetic injectables industry in The Australian.

The recent raid at the Ketthip Beauty Clinic in Sydney renewed calls for changes in Australia’s cosmetic injectables industry. The Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) issued a warning to clinic patients who may have been exposed to hepatitis C or HIV due to unregulated and unsafe practices and the use of injectables that were imported, counterfeit, or past their expiration date.

Medical professionals, especially those in the cosmetics industry, stated that federal regulations and state enforcement of these rules were too lax. The HCCC has also confirmed increasing cases of unqualified people impersonating medical professionals and offering cosmetic services using unsafe practices and unapproved products.

The Medical Board of Australia and The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency announced in 2023 that they will focus on cosmetic injectables. However, they are unsure why reforms in this industry have been so slow. Dr Ritu Gupta expressed her concerns, citing an incident that happened near her Ultimo clinic where a woman died because an unregistered and unregulated doctor improperly administered a local anesthetic for a cosmetic filler.

The AHPRA and the national medical boards are developing new guidelines for the cosmetic injectables industry. Dr Ritu, along with dermatologists and licensed practitioners in the industry, agrees that change is needed and delays are unacceptable.
