Sydney specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta was recently featured in The Sun-Herald & The Age for her take on the effectiveness of beauty products. Individuals are under the impression that they need to switch skin and hair products, assuming that their skin becomes “immune” to these over time.
Dr Ritu explained that there is no need to change products if the current ones work well. However, one should consider that skin and hair needs may change with age, exposure to environmental factors, and new skin issues. Generally speaking, it’s best to stick with the tried and tested products and to modify care regimens to adapt to changes. For instance, switching to a richer moisturiser during winter as opposed to a light moisturiser during summertime.
Adapting routines according to hormonal changes is also critical. Dr Ritu emphasised that skincare should incorporate essential ingredients like vitamin A in sunscreen, ideally starting in one’s mid-20s to early 30s. Those who suffer from pigmentation should use serums with tranexamic acid, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide. Serums must also contain vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that reduces DNA damage due to sun exposure and pollution.
Similarly, haircare does not have to change if personal and environmental needs remain the same. Dr Ritu stated that if products don’t seem to work, it is likely due to build-up. A weekly dose of clarifying shampoo and hair mask should do the trick. As hair condition changes with the season, targeting humidity, frizz, and sun damage with a good shampoo, conditioner, and sun shield is the best solution.
