Sydney’s leading dermatologist, Dr Ritu Gupta, was recently interviewed on ABC 702 Radio about her expert views on skin pigmentation. Dr Ritu stated that with the many unusual changes in the skin’s appearance, it can be difficult to self-diagnose. It is critical to have your skin checked by an expert, starting with a GP, who may refer you to a dermatologist for a more detailed diagnosis and effective treatment.
She expressed her views about laser treatments, which are becoming very popular these days. Dr Ritu warned to see only a specialist dermatologist for these sessions; a specialist has the letters FACD after their name, meaning they are a fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists.
Calls and texts from listeners about skin pigmentation and various issues poured in, and Dr Ritu provided clarity on each issue. There were questions about spider veins, painful hand lesions, moles, birthmarks, hypopigmentation, melanoma, and melasma. Despite the differences in each, Dr Ritu reminded listeners that it is always best to have their symptoms checked to get the right diagnosis and, as a result, receive the appropriate treatment.
Dr Ritu also emphasised the importance of regularly applying and reapplying sunscreen for maximum sun protection.
