Channel 7’s Sunrise Program featured Sydney specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta for her recommendations on winter skin care and her tips for aging skin.
Dr Ritu mentioned products containing the best ingredients in skincare during winter. First, she stressed richer ingredients such as humectants (glycerin, urea, and hyaluronic acid), which draw water into the skin. Meanwhile, emollients (such as ceramides and dimethicone) add lipids to the skin, which improves its barrier function. She also recommended moisturisers containing silicone, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid as these work best during cooler and drier months.
However, it’s not all just about skincare products; it’s also about an individual’s daily routines. Long hot showers, overuse of harsh soaps and perfumed products, toners, and exfoliants must be avoided. Moisturising while skin is still moist helps improve skin health.
Dr Ritu stressed that skin care during winter is similar to caring for peri- and post-menopausal skin, as aging skin produces less oil and experiences slower cell turnover due to lower estrogen levels.
Products with decent concentrations of Vitamin A are critical. Additionally, brands with Vitamin C are ideal, as this vitamin has antioxidant effects that shield the skin from environmental pollution and stressors responsible for DNA damage and premature aging.
Dr Ritu further stressed the use of sunscreen, especially those containing oil and oil-based ingredients, as these protect the skin for longer periods of time.
