Sydney’s leading specialist dermatologist, Dr Ritu Gupta, was interviewed on ABC 702 Radio for her expertise on the use of Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications for various skin conditions.
Ozempic (semaglutide) is a drug developed to control type 2 diabetes in adults; however, it has recently been used off-label to control weight. If not used correctly, these drugs can cause major issues such as loss of strength, stability, and premature ageing of the face and body.
Dr Ritu explained how GLP-1 medications contribute to weight loss, noting that most of the weight loss (around 40%) is muscle. Muscle loss negatively impacts a person’s health, longevity, and strength. It is associated with the ageing of the face (Ozempic face), body, and pelvic floor.
She recommended using devices that help build muscle, including ones she uses in her practice, which can increase muscle by 25% and reduce fat by 30%.
Increasing awareness of what these drugs can do should be a priority, says Dr Ritu. She also mentioned potential new medications on the market, similar to GLP, that have been developed to result in less muscle loss.
