Dr Ritu Gupta Interviewed on ABC Illawarra Radio About Hair Loss

Dr Ritu Gupta - ABC Illawarra Radio

Sydney dermatologist, Dr Ritu Gupta, was interviewed by ABC Radio for her expertise on hair loss. Hair loss is a common condition affecting both men and women, and most of the time, individuals consult a specialist after they’ve spent a fortune and wasted hours on unproven treatments that will never work.

Dr Ritu explained that there are three primary causes of hair loss: patterned hair loss, which is common among both men and women; acute shedding (resulting from stress, illness, post-pregnancy, medications, etc.); and alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness. These are non-scarring forms of hair loss; thus, hair can still regrow. Meanwhile, scarring hair loss is caused by rare conditions that scar the hair bulb.

However, regardless of the cause, Dr Ritu emphasised the importance of early professional diagnosis to ensure effective management. She cited common hair loss treatments, including Minoxidil and other prescription medications, which are both inexpensive and effective. On the other hand, hair transplants, performed by plastic surgeons, are becoming increasingly popular.

Finally, Dr Ritu emphasised the importance of consumer education and greater transparency regarding specialists’ credentials and qualifications. This empowers individuals to distinguish legitimate health professionals from those who may provide misleading or fraudulent diagnoses.
