Leading Sydney specialist dermatologist, Dr Ritu Gupta, was interviewed by James O’Loughlin of ABC 702 Radio Sydney for her expert views on acne.
Dr Ritu discussed the causes of acne, primarily highlighting diet and hormones, especially in teenagers and young adults. Acne is curable, says Dr Ritu, but treatment can vary from person to person. It’s important to consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis, especially for individuals who have previously used treatments that don’t work.
Dr Ritu answered phone-in questions during her interview. One was from a 71-year-old caller who mistakenly thought she had persistent acne and blackheads on the nose. Dr Ritu clarified that her condition is not acne, but rosacea, which often resembles acne to the untrained eye. She also mentioned the caller’s blackheads were prominent pores. Making pores less visible is possible through laser treatments, which stimulate collagen production deep in the skin’s layers.
Another question was from a caller who was concerned about her daughter’s slow response to Accutane. Dr Ritu stated that responses to acne medications vary; some may respond quickly, while some may take time. Any early improvement during the first month is a bonus.
Dr Ritu clarified the notion that GPs often overlook acne, stating that GPs are capable of prescribing topical treatments and antibiotics but may not be able to prescribe stronger treatments. For more severe or persistent acne, it is best to consult a specialist who can provide specialised care and advanced treatment options.
