Dr Ritu Gupta Featured in The Australian On Regenerative Medicine

The Australian

Sydney specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta was featured in The Australian for her take on regenerative medicine, a new field that encompasses many sub-specialties, including dermatology.

Regenerative medicine focuses on repair, rejuvenation, replacement, and regeneration of tissues. It examines the root cause of ageing and seeks ways to stimulate skin cell growth. Dr Ritu explained various dermatologic treatments that support regenerative medicine, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), salmon sperm facial, lasers, and off-label medications.

PRP is a procedure where blood is drawn and spun to harvest growth-factor-rich plasma, which can be injected into the skin or applied to the surface, hence the name “vampire facial.” This treatment has been known to promote wound healing and reduce hair loss.

The salmon sperm facial is a rejuvenation treatment that utilises DNA polynucleotides from salmon sperm, which contain powerful anti-inflammatory properties. These stimulate the production of collagen and elastic tissue, thereby preventing cell death.

Dr Ritu expressed caution in the use of these medications and therapies as regenerative medicine is still an emerging field. Consumers need more comprehensive studies and must be aware of potential side effects.

Dr Ritu urged consumers to seek care only from accredited specialists such as dermatologists, ensuring that their treatments are both safe and effective.
