Specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta appeared on the Ageless Radiance Club’s special mini-series on YouTube about women’s health, hormones, and menopause. Hosted by Bahar Etminan, founder and editor of RESCU.com.au, the episode coincides with World Menopause Month.
Dr Ritu noted that menopause is under-explored in medicine, even though women spend nearly a third of their lives in this stage. The drop in oestrogen and progesterone causes skin thinning and dryness, slower healing, increased inflammation, loss of skin elasticity, hair thinning, and changes in muscle and bone.
She touched on the genito-urinary syndrome of menopause, encompassing issues such as dryness, thinning of the lining, looseness, and weakening of the walls, which can be due to childbirth, loss of tone, and ageing. These conditions are primarily caused by the decrease in oestrogen.
Often, patients see a dermatologist after spending a lot of money on products and treatments that don’t work. Dr Ritu recommends that only prescription treatments and medical management can solve hair loss. And for all other skin, hair, and nail conditions, a thorough diagnosis must come first before a tailored treatment plan can be created.
The controversial use of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic was also one of the topics, specifically Ozempic face and body. Dr Ritu explained that these are hallmark effects of rapid weight loss after taking these medications, as 40% of the weight people lose is muscle. It is also critical to recognise early the effects of rapid weight loss when taking GLP-1 medications and to address them before they worsen. She mentioned that specialised treatments are available at her Sydney clinic to improve pelvic health and preserve muscle.
When asked about the possibility of achieving a “glass skin” or a luminous complexion, Dr Ritu explained that it depends on what you start with, whether your skin is oily, acne-prone, has large pores, has pigmentation issues, or has wrinkles. Various technologies are now available to revive skin, creating a flawless complexion.
Dr Ritu ended her interview by encouraging those seeking specialist cosmetic dermatologists in their area, particularly for menopause, muscle, and pelvic floor treatments, to visit the Australasian Society of Cosmetic Dermatologists (ASCD) website.
