Sydney specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta joins Channel 7’s Sunrise breakfast show on the segment “Are You Smarter Than AI?” where she assessed the correctness of AI-generated answers to skin care-related questions.
For the first question, “What are the best products for anti-ageing?” Dr Ritu agreed with ChatGPT answering the use of daily sunscreen, retinols, and vitamins, but recommended a tailored approach to skin care. In the use of sunscreen, she mentioned that the best products are physical and chemical (hybrid) sunscreens as these give the best all-day protection. She reiterated that the amount of sunscreen, reapplication, and applying it even on cloudy days are as important and are missing from the AI answers.
The second question was “When should you worry about a mole?” and Gemini listed the ABCDEs of Skin Cancer, an acronym for self-assessment. Dr Ritu explained that the answer was very common, but it could lead people to self-diagnose. The best is still to see a professional in case you spot something new or unusual.
The last question was “What is the solution for cold lips in winter?” with ChatGPT answering applying lip balms, avoiding licking lips, staying hydrated, and consulting a dermatologist. Dr Ritu added to the answer by recommending the use of lip balm with emollients to trap moisture and humectants to add moisture. Not licking the lips is also important, says the Sydney dermatologist, as saliva contains digestive enzymes that could further cause injury to cracked lips.
Finally, Dr Ritu mentioned that people with cracked lips should see a specialist as this could be due to an underlying medical issue such as allergic contact dermatitis, infections, or precancerous sun spots,
After the segment, it simply proves that it’s safer to consult with a GP or dermatologist for skin concerns rather than trusting AI that only gathers information from the web, which could be written by just anybody.
