Sydney specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta was interviewed on the Afternoons with Kathryn Robinson show on ABC Radio Sydney for Melanoma March. Dr Ritu expressed her appreciation for the increasing awareness generated by events like this. She also emphasised that increasing public engagement is vital to raising funds for research, considering that melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer.
Dr Ritu stated that early prevention remains crucial, and regular skin checks should never be overlooked. It’s okay to visit a GP for baseline skin assessments, but for complicated and multiple moles, a specialist dermatologist should be consulted. She also expressed her frustration with recent teenage behaviour regarding sun protection, including forgetting to apply SPF, achieving the “Australian glow,” or getting tan lines. Continuous reminders to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, and Slide are essential for children starting from when they are little to the time they are grown up.
Dr Ritu answered questions from listeners of the ABC Radio show, including enquiries on skin grafting, biopsies, unusual rashes on the extremities, and skin cancer susceptibility and treatments. And just as anyone can develop melanoma on the skin, Dr Ritu stated that it is also possible to have it inside the eye or on the conjunctiva.
