Sydney specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta was featured in ABC Radio’s NSW Afternoons hosted by Kathryn Robinson for her expertise in cystic acne.
Dr Ritu revealed seeing dozens of patients daily in her Ultimo clinic, young and old, with cystic acne. She answered any-and-all questions from callers and texters of the radio show.
Cystic acne affects teens and adults, most especially women. It is a medical issue that can be painful, scarring, and can cause poor self-confidence. Dr Ritu said that cystic acne is different from regular acne; it’s deeper, wider, and stimulates a lot of inflammation, which is why it can’t clear using standard acne treatments.
Callers asked about cystic acne treatments, the use of Accutane in low doses, and acne recurrence. Dr Ritu mentioned that there are now more treatment options for cystic acne, using a combination of topical treatments, antibiotics, and procedures such as light therapy or lasers. Dr Ritu also stressed the importance of seeing a GP for a clear diagnosis and treatment.
