Sydney specialist dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta recently joined ABC Radio to share her expert views on at-home skincare gadgets.
While devices such as LED masks, acne-fighting wands, and home microneedling tools claim to deliver professional-level results, Dr Ritu clarified that they often have little to no actual effect on the skin. She explained that the only truly effective devices are medical-grade technologies that must be operated by a professional.
Dr Ritu also detailed how clinical treatments work, including professional laser therapies and microneedling. These energy-based devices are used in clinical settings to effectively treat issues such as pigmentation, scars, wrinkles, moles, and tattoos. It is important to be prudent when selecting skincare products, particularly when it comes to expensive devices that may ultimately be a waste of money.
During the segment, Dr Ritu fielded questions from callers, many of whom shared that they had purchased expensive gadgets but saw no results. Dr Ritu noted that, in many cases, affordable prescription medication is far more effective than these devices. She also answered questions regarding acne, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and the role of nutrition in skin health.
